Is your desk looking a little worse for wear? Is there an avalanche every time you open the break room refrigerator? There are things you can do to tidy up your workstation using affordable items you’ll have around the office!
If your desk chair is on wheels and your carpet is looking a little worse for wear, invest in a chair mat. These are available at any office supply store and run about $40. If you have a chair mat already, you should wipe it down with a damp cloth at least once a week to clean off the dirt and dust accumulated over the last few days. You can also vacuum the mat to get the stubborn debris left over.
Over time, your desk chair or the lobby couch may get stained or discolored due to age, food, and spilled beverages. Luckily, there is a way to remove the stain using materials readily available around the office. By mixing one tablespoon of dish soap and two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide, you can create a stain remover that will remove the stains without a trace. This method works best if left to sit for several hours, so this is best done at the end of the day. Mix the dish soap and the hydrogen peroxide and generously scrub the mix into the chair using a small brush or the back of a spoon. If you make more of this mixture than you need, make sure you keep it in a tightly sealed container in a dark space. Hydrogen peroxide will break down in the light and the cleaner will no longer work.
Your electronics are a little trickier to clean, but could always use it. Use a microfiber cloth or coffee filter on your screens to clean them. At most, the cloth should be slightly moistened, but do not clean your screen with a wet cloth. Water will damage the screen and you will lose functionality at best and the screen at worst. Turn your screen off before cleaning or dusting it and wait for it to completely cool. This will minimize the risk of damage to your screen.
Fridge running a little full? At the end of the week, schedule a disposal day. Make sure everyone knows to get anything they want to keep out of the fridge by the end of the day on Friday and toss whatever is left. This keeps from overfilling the refrigerator, prevents odor and mold growth from expired or stale food and keeps your food fresh for longer periods of time. Brenner Facility Services will clean the inside of your refrigerator once a month top to bottom, removing anything besides milk and condiments to keep your refrigerator in top working condition.
