Summer may be in full swing, but that doesn’t mean that now is the time to stop maintaining critical parts of your facility. While the warmer months do not have the same issues as winter, like tracked-in salt and snow, certain elements from the outdoors can affect how your floors look and how your business is presented to visitors and new customers. Make sure you follow these tips to keep your floors well-maintained and clean through the summer and fall!

Spot Cleaning

Spot cleaning can be performed daily, or even more often if needed. This encompasses sweeping and mopping areas with high foot traffic including hallways, entryways, kitchens and bullpens for office environments and schools. If most of your space has carpet on the floors, the floor should be vacuumed daily to pick up dirt and other debris that can get stuck and cause foul odors throughout the area or trigger allergic reactions. While you should do a deep-clean of your floors every few months for general maintenance, spot cleaning can keep up the appearance of the floor and reduce slip and tripping hazards.

Humidity Control

Have you noticed your floors becoming moldy or warped over the last several months? The humidity level of your building may be to blame. Moisture can move through the air and embed within the floorboards, causing wood flooring to expand and become dislodged, leading to unevenness and tripping hazards. Running dehumidifiers to even out the level of moisture in the air, keeping it between the ideal levels of 35 to 55% to prevent problems with your floors, wallpaper, paint or upholstery. Higher humidity can also lead to mold forming in unvacuumed carpets due to debris left in the fibers and spreading as people move across the area. If mold begins to form in your carpets, they will need to be deep-cleaned to extract the cause and remove any leftover odor.

Air Quality

Did you know that your floors can affect the air quality in your facility? Microscopic debris embedded in your carpet can become dislodged and move through the air and into the lungs of employees and visitors of your facility. Keep these areas clean by vacuuming over each area twice to extract debris and shampoo the area at least once a month for a more thorough clean.
